Someone had an idea to put a probe on a coment so far a way that during landing it took 30 minutes for information from it took 30 minutes. 30 years later it’s done. I always feel people who say “we did it” when their sports team does something great but all I can say about this space mission is WE DID IT! It’s like 500 million fucking kilometers away. The precision needed for a successful landing was centimeters. And it went well. The Philae lander dispatched from its mothership Rosetta and touched down on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko earlier today.

It took immense amount of manpower, smarts and resources to pull this of. People have dedicated like half their lifetime to make this reality.

The data coming out of this mission will have high value to the scientific community, but more than that it shows us that humanity can go further and further into space. It also shows us humanity can shoot a sparrow, flying in space 500 million kilometers away using a robot.

I just can’t even.
