Vocoder song week #1 : Mantronix – Needle To The Groove

I am a sucker for robot voices so I will add one song every week featuring the glorious vocoder. Technically it will probably be a mix of vocoders, ring modulators and  LPC (Linear Prediction Codec) devices, talkboxes and maybe if I feel adventurous some aggressive autotune. But yeah robot voices. Robotic voice effects. That shit.

Two turntables and a microphone. Mantronix

Needle To The Grove is found on Mantronix debut album which I think is called Mantronix. It got some rap, funk, electro, poly rhythm and – drum whirl – some kickass vocoder. And I actually think I heard Beck’s Odelay that, reference the line “Two turntables and a microphone”, before I heard Needle To The Groove. I wasn’t born with a silver rap record collection in my mouth you know. I think Beck and Beastie Boys must be the most noteworthy people who sampled this from this record.

I haven’t found any proof that it is a vocoder or any information of what vocoder but I am sure it is one. Probably a eight-band one and a analog synth feeding it.

Heres the track on Odelay that reference that turntables line. And yeah it has some vocoder as well.
